Tradition or narrative
Nulman describes Berikh Shemayh as a kabbalistic Aramaic prayer quoted from the Zohar and introduced into the liturgy by Isaac Luria (Ari); the Zohar attributes it to Rabbi Shimon bar Yohai (second century). It was prescribed in Italy in 1540 and spread from about 1599.
