Nulman records that Modeh Ani appears for the first time in the sixteenth century in the mystical commentary Seder Hayom (Moses ibn Makhir of Safed, Venice 1599); the Jerusalem Talmud already cites the opening words Modeh Ani with different endings for the three daily services.
