For centuries, Jews have located their beginnings in the five books attributed to Moses. These recount Abraham, Sarah and their descendants, departure from Egypt, and revelation at Mount Sinai. Genesis presents children, particularly sons, as God's greatest blessing to Abraham's descendants after land. Its narrator attends first to Sarah, Hagar, Rebecca and Rachel, and later to Leah, Bilhah and Zilpah, chiefly insofar as these women bring that promise to fulfillment.
