Statement
The monarchy tried to create, in both Judah and Israel, a political and religious center for Israelite culture, concentrating power, wealth and religious symbols under royal control. In Judah the center was Jerusalem, home to the king and a temple; the city, inhabited by only a few thousand people in the tenth century BCE, had by the seventh century BCE an estimated population of 25,000 or more.
