Statement
After the Davidic monarchy fell in the Babylonian Exile of 586 BCE it was never restored, but its influence persisted. Messianism, the expectation that God would send a savior of royal lineage to free Israel and rebuild the Temple, was born of the post-exilic hope that God would restore the king. God is called king in prayers, and Jerusalem remains important, as the word Zionism shows, from Zion, a biblical synonym for Jerusalem.
