Statement

A priestly class served God in sanctuaries and supervised worship and sacrifice, as priests did for other deities. Although the Bible rejects some neighboring divination, it permits interpreting dreams and casting lots. Prophecy likewise has parallels: a Jordanian inscription from Deir 'Alla records visions of Balaam, the non-Israelite prophet of Numbers 22 to 24, while Assyria preserved collections of prophetic oracles.
