Statement
Jewish culture did not appear suddenly: it evolved from an earlier Israelite culture, from which it inherited beliefs, practices, languages, texts and patterns of social organization. Questions such as the origins of circumcision, the Sabbath and dietary rules can be answered only by looking at this pre-Jewish culture, and biblical literature is the richest source on it.
