Statement

The texts gained value because they preserved, or seemed to preserve, God's words to Israel: the promise to Abraham, the revelation at Sinai, and the visions and oracles of prophets like Isaiah and Jeremiah. Addressed to earlier Israelites, some messages also aimed at future generations and seemed to speak to precisely the dire circumstances of the Judahites after the conquest.
