Statement

Resentment grew because many Jews dreamed of another reality. Heirs to the apocalypticism born in the Hellenistic period, they expected God to defeat the Romans. Several apocalypses date from Roman times, such as the War Scroll, with its final clash of the 'sons of light', perhaps the sect itself, against the 'sons of darkness', who may have included the Romans.
