ZAKHORIUM

Statement

Paul and other Christian missionaries had influence because they went out to people: they toured the big cities of the Roman world and wrote in Greek, the language of many diaspora Jews. The early rabbis did not work that way. They wrote in a learned Hebrew and Aramaic that Jews outside Palestine could hardly follow, and even there they moved mostly among villages and small towns, rather than in the cities, where they would have stood out more. No inscription or archaeological trace of the time shows their influence.
