Statement
The Abbasid rulers abandoned the Umayyad practice of preferring prior Arabian notables, since plenty of non-Arabian Muslims of the Muslim East had fueled the revolt against the Umayyads. The mix of ethnic groups and religious cultures made Baghdad a cosmopolitan and creative center. Caliph al-Mansur (754 to 775) sponsored the translation into Arabic of Persian texts and of Greek philosophy and science.
