Statement
Before the 1066 attack, a venomous poem against Joseph ibn That Naghrela and the Jews of Granada by a Muslim author, Abu Ishaq of Elvira, seems to have played a role; it shows poetry's social and political role and the unease of many Muslims at the rise of Jews (and Christians) to power under Islam. Even in this polemic the author felt obliged to give a legal argument: the Jews had supposedly violated their covenant, that is, the conditions of the Pact of Umar, so revenge was acceptable.
