Statement
Byzantine Rabbanite Judaism produced few great scholars of law, though many poets and midrashists came from the empire. Byzantine Karaite legalists, by contrast, set the agenda for their whole movement for four centuries. The Rabbanite Tobias ben Eliezer wrote the well-known midrashic compilation Midrash Leqah Tov and took part in a messianic movement that swept the Jews of Greece as the Crusaders moved east.
