ZAKHORIUM

Statement

Hasdai Crescas described the events of 1391 in a moving letter sent to southern France: at Toledo the rabbis 'sanctified the Name' in public and many converted, unable to endure the strain; the following Sabbath it was the turn of the Barcelona community, with some 250 dead. The rest took refuge in the fortress, where mobs shot at them with bows and catapults; numerous victims died as martyrs, and every survivor was baptized, and only a few escaped to baronial towns. Today, he wrote, no one is known as a Jew in Barcelona.
