Statement
Another childhood ritual, meant to bring young boys into Torah study, may also have been influenced by Christianity: the boy was given honey cakes inscribed with Bible verses, symbolically acting out Ezekiel 3:3 ('it was as sweet as honey in my mouth'). The historian Ivan Marcus has proposed that the custom may have been a Jewish reworking of the Church's central liturgical mystery, the Eucharist.
