Statement
Despite the success of the relocation, the Karaites drew comparatively few followers: according to Benjamin of Tudela in the twelfth century, only 500 lived in Constantinople. The great majority of medieval Jews kept to the rabbinic tradition, which weathered the challenge, though in the tenth century Karaite scholars contributed significantly to Hebrew philology, philosophy and biblical exegesis.
